“I worked with Isha in the Global Operations Unit at Relief International. Isha is an exceptional colleague: she is articulate, thoughtful, highly-organized and superb in setting priorities. In her time at RI, she independently rolled out a new procurement protocol and trained global staff on it. But her biggest contribution to RI was her initiative to restructure the inventory system, which synthesized isolated inventory data into a single cloud-based database and allowed for easy tracking and management. Isha thinks out of the box to find new ways to tackle challenges. Despite being new to operations, her support in strengthening the operation systems, policies and capacity was remarkable. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Isha and would be very happy to have any future opportunities to work with her!”
- Blake DiCosola, Ph.D. “Isha was a valuable team member for a Design Research project we worked while at the Kellogg School of Management. Her curious nature, creative thinking abilities, adaptability, and strong work ethic all contributed to her success on the project. I'd gladly work with Isha again.”

- Janosch Kamal Sbeih 🇵🇸 Sounds like an amazing #vacancy to work on the intersection of systemic #riskassessment and #nature. I love their explicit wording:"ASRA is founded on a set of principles including non-human sanctity. Incorporating nature into #riskanalysis is not merely a matter of #environmental #stewardship or human self-preservation. #Naturecentric approaches attribute intrinsic value to all living organisms and ecosystems, independent of their utility to humans. This perspective recognizes the #interconnectedness of all life forms and the importance of preserving the integrity and health of other #species and #ecosystems for their own sake, and not just as a resource for humans. This approach involves evaluating the impacts of human activities on #biodiversity, #habitat #connectivity, and #ecological #processes." 5
- Dawn Grenier If you've appreciated Crappy Funding Practices, here's an opportunity to get involved. As Vu Le summarized: "Behind these posts on LinkedIn are teams of volunteers spending hours communicating with folks who nominate funders, vetting submissions, crafting the call-outs, engaging with social media, developing list of resources, planning meetings and organizing, etc. It’s a lot of work and right now all volunteer-run. We need more people involved. So, if you’re interested in helping out, please join a special meeting we’re hosting onMay 14that 10am PT / 1 pm ET, where we’ll update you on what’s been going on, and present the different options for you to plug into." - Daniel Shaffer A fantastic article from Sarah Moody (per Center for Effective Philanthropy) on reimagining the program officer role. The critical (and often tough) questions that started the process:1. How are we ever going to be effective at addressing root causes of health inequities through systems change if we are not willing to change our own internal systems?2. How do we build real relationships if we are not willing to be honest and transparent about our own faults, learnings, and willingness to grow?3. How do we serve and collaborate with communities across Missouri if we are not actively engaged with, living in, learning from, and involving community members?Grantmakers, take the time to consider these questions and start your own process. It might be hard work, but it will absolutely be worth it in the end and your grantees will be incredibly appreciative.
- Karabi Acharya Pregnancy and childbirth should be a time of joy and excitement for new parents, not one where they must worry about receiving adequate care. What can we learn from Rwanda, where the maternal mortality rate has dropped a staggering 84%? Community-based healthcare providers—who actively listen to women's needs and opinions, and deliver culturally sensitive interventions—have worked wonders for Rwandan families, helping them feel supported and informed. For centuries, women of color in the U.S. have been pivotal leaders, organizers, and advocates for ending the maternal mortality crisis. As a nation, we must do more to follow their lead and protect expectant mothers and their babies.https://lnkd.in/g3438wcQ #MaternalMortality #HealthEquity #MaternalHealth 79
- Nadine Wahab Climate Justice has become a catch phrase for addressing the inequities in the climate movement. As small funders/foundations and CSR enter the space we need to insure that we meets the needs of the most vunrable communities, and not just further exasperate injustice. In the article for Alliance Magazine, I explain how focusing on a just transition and decarbonisation is in it self an injustice to millions around the world. https://lnkd.in/d8h2AbtF 1
- Tosca Bruno-van Vijfeijken [ PODCAST EPISODE DROPPING SOON!] 🎤 What constitutes a culture of philanthropy within nonprofits and NGOs? How do I *see* that?🎤 How has the field of direct giving by small donors, and monthly giving changed in the last 10-20 years?🎤 What hurdles do we need to overcome to persuade donors of the importance of monthly giving?🎤 Also: are there any tensions between the need for fundraisers to use ethical storytelling that starts from the agency of program participants, and what spurs small donors - at least in the global North -- to give?In my upcoming #podcast episode, I interview Erica Waasdorp, President of A Direct Solution, and a super experienced consultant on nonprofit fundraising, on trends in direct fundraising. We two 'Dutchies' are keeping it real 😉Get ready to listen -- episode drops on Monday, June 17!You can find all past episodes here -> https://lnkd.in/d3VTUB2Get ready to listen in -- episode drops on Monday, June 17!You can find all past episodes here -> https://lnkd.in/d3VTUB2#podcast #ngo #nonprofit #fundraising #resourcemobilization #resourcedevelopment 7 2 Comments
- Tosca Bruno-van Vijfeijken Really good podcast episode of Joan Garry with Jeremy Heimans, Chair of the movement building organization Purpose, in which he updates his assessment on how citizen activism has evolved in the last 5-10 years. Two important points that Jeremy makes (among others):💡 A focus on sector-level developments, and building an ecosystem for civic activism, is needed, to overcome NGOs' tendencies to focus on their own organizational survival, competition, and outcomes. This is similar to what organizations like WINGS and other Philanthropy Support Organizations (PSOs) aim for in philanthropy.💡 An important cautionary word: Heimans notes a tendency towards ideological purity in how we message to those who do not currently agree with our overall progressive worldviews -- if we want to get those people on board with our campaigns, we may have to message differently. I agree with this second point. Heimans references causes that focus on welcoming refugees in global North countries; I see the same messaging approach which he mentioned work well in my part of chronically economically depressed Upstate New York regarding how refugees have improved our economy and quality of life. Let the messenger and the message be people whom our audience already identifies with -- the message will resonate better in that case.Do give it a listen! 8 2 Comments

- Jamie Bussel If you’re curious how market consolidation and structural racism impact food access, or simply interested in data visualization, this fascinating new tool from Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) and the UChicago Data Science Institute Open Spatial Lab is for you. With support from RWJF, RAFI and the Open Spatial Lab developed the Grocery Gap Atlas, which visualizes a number of intersecting datasets: food access, measured as access to grocery stores; corporate concentration of the grocery industry; and residential segregation. Seeing how corporate and systemic factors map onto inequities in food access is so valuable for advocates and decisionmakers—and making this data available to all is vital to combating food injustice across the country.https://lnkd.in/g6TJxE7V 64 4 Comments

- Karabi Acharya 🏗️Sustainable Development Spotlight!Last week, I kicked off a six-week series spotlighting practitioners and community leaders working in equitable and sustainable development. These testimonials, gathered by the International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) team, feature inspiring stories from around the globe of changemakers working to build healthy spaces, improve infrastructure, and drive health equity. Check out our latest spotlight–it might even spark an idea for your community!Vibrant public spaces are essential for ensuring the social, physical, and economic wellbeing of residents. When designed as attractive, welcoming gathering places for people of all ages, these spaces can foster social interactions, support the local economy, improve resident health, and more. Drawing on examples from Bogotá, Colombia, Gil (Guillermo) Penalosa Penalosa of 8 80 Cities shares about the power of building equitable and inclusive spaces, like parks and public facilities, and how these spaces can transform urban areas.Learn more about equitable city planning and explore other stories on community-led health equity initiatives: https://lnkd.in/eZsuT9bf 10

- Jennie Riley Flagging this call for articles, creative writing, and art from the Nonprofit Quarterly Magazine on "A Social Justice Lens for Health Innovation" - Deadline is September 30th."Our upcoming issue will delve into how technological innovations have, at times, exacerbated and deepened health inequities. Importantly, it will also discuss the significant potential of these innovations to enhance health and wellbeingwhen applied effectively and responsibly. We are seeking articles written by movement leaders and practitioners in the field that lay outthe current state of health innovations, concerns of those working in the field of health, and visions for a socially just, ethical, and responsible direction forward. We also welcome creative approaches to these topics.Questions we would like you to consider:How can we use innovation as a tool to advance resilience, justice, and love? How can we ensure that technological innovations, which are often framed as good for humankind, are not in fact being used to further racist, sexist, capitalist, and/or authoritarian agendas?"https://lnkd.in/eviTX37c 9

- Rachel Sacks, MPH Do you want to know more about what's what in the world of grantseeking?Well, then I'm pleased to share the release of GrantStation's annual State of Grantseeking Report, a helpful and free resource that sheds light on the latest trends and insights in grant funding. This comprehensive report, reflecting the experiences of several thousand survey respondents, offers valuable analytics that can help your organization refine its grantseeking strategy. Here’s why this report is a must-read:💡 Benchmarking: Understand reasonable levels of funding to expect based on median awards by organizational budget and mission.📈 Planning: Leverage the information to educate board members and other stakeholders and manage expectations effectively.📚 Free Access: Take advantage of this information at no cost to ensure your organization stays competitive in the world of grants. What's one of my favorite takeaways from the report? The median largest award from non-government funders was $37,000 while the median largest award from government funders was $259,000! That's part of why I love writing government grants so much - it can garner much bigger awards for my nonprofit clients! 💵 If your organization is looking to enhance your grantseeking strategies, don’t miss out on this opportunity to equip your team with key data and insights! You can find a copy of the report here:https://lnkd.in/gwhhrtRa#Grantseeking #GovernmentGrants #NonProfitFunding #2024StateOfGrantseeking #FundingStrategy #GrantManagement #DataDrivenDecisions 19 22 Comments
- Theodore Dieujuste, M.A In a powerful #collaboration aimed at safeguarding the voting rights of marginalized communities, Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. and Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Inc. have joined forces to advance Our Voice Our Vote initiative. The upcoming 2024 #elections present a crucial opportunity to advocate for equal access to the #ballot box, and we are committed to ensuring that every #voice in our #community is heard.Through comprehensive #outreach programs, Groove Phi Groove and Swing Phi Swing will tirelessly work to inform our communities about the significance of #voting and its powerful role in shaping our collective #future. We recognize that voting rights have been historically targeted and suppressed in #marginalized communities. This partnership aims to empower and equip communities with the knowledge and #resources needed to exercise their #right to vote, ensuring they are fully prepared to make their voices count in the 2024 elections. This also includes educating those in the criminal justice system—specifically individuals who have served their time and are no longer #incarcerated—about their right to vote in states like New Jersey and New York. It’s crucial to spread awareness that eligible individuals who are no longer behind bars can and should participate in the voting process to help shape #policies that directly impact their lives and communities.Together, we will organize engaging events, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness about voting rights, encourage voter registration, and foster a sense of community engagement. By combining our strengths and leveraging our extensive networks, Groove Phi Groove and Swing Phi Swing will amplify their #impact and create a powerful movement dedicated to protecting the voting rights of the historically marginalized. Our mission is clear: with education as our weapon and unity as our shield, we are committed to uplifting our communities through the power of the #vote. 27
- Richard Hawkes Fascinating read in Stanford Social Innovation Review on how “strategic philanthropy” has failed.https://lnkd.in/dYx9UpDK“This failure of strategic philanthropy is rooted in a set of assumptions…that the beneficiaries of philanthropic support are incapable of solving their own problems, that wealthy donors have the wisdom and incentive to solve society’s many challenges, and that the social sector is an effective alternative to government in building an equitable and sustainable society.”“Mounting evidence suggests that these assumptions are wrong.”“This mismatch between charity and well-being is not limited to the United States. Countries with the highest per capita charitable giving—the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom—tend to perform poorly on measures of social progress. The countries that perform best—Scandinavian countries, Germany, and Japan—give to charity as little as 2 percent of what the United States gives per capita, relying on government rather than philanthropy to meet their society’s needs.”“The more we highlight philanthropy as the solution, the more we excuse government and corporations from the need to change.” 79 5 Comments
- Dirk Bischof Whilst its hard to see that any progress has been made, to the contrary - it looks like 0 progress made and everything got worse, with recent years breaking through the 1.5C targets. We mustn't give up hope that the many initiatives that have been kicked off as a result of these agreements, have prevented worse things from happening...too optimistic? maybeBut working in the sustainability and SDG space has never been more exciting, with many people sharing that a just transition to a more sustainable, de-growth and circular economy is, ...possible. The questions is how fast, to prevent worse things from happening (Climate Catastrophy, Ecological Collapse, ...the list is getting longer).Currently the ANNUAL financing gap to the 2030 SDGs is (according to UN estimates), around $4 trillion. This is the same as Germany's or Japan's Gross Domestic Product. This is a staggering number and concept that the money missing to achieve the SDGs is the same as the monetary value of ALL finished goods and services made in Germany or Japan on an annual basis. And yet, the world economy is worth around$100 Trillion, so $4 trillion = 4%. That ...almost...sounds doable? too optimistic? maybeWhen it comes to asset managers, total discretionary assets under management (AUM) of the 500 biggest managers amounted to USD 113.7 trillion at the end of 2022, down by 13.7% from the end of 2021. The largest, BlackRock, manages $10 trillion and the next biggest 2, Vanguard ($9 trillion) and Fidelity ($4 trillion). Surely, investing into solutions on a planet that is actually liveable with resources being consumed at a sustainable pace is what its at? Otherwise, what will be managed in 20 or 30 years? 6 4 Comments
