The RTO debate seems destined to last forever, with each side emphasizing the key advantages of their approach. Just to list the biggest selling points, being in the office certainly does increase the degree of interpersonal relationships (maybe even collaboration), while WFH eliminates the time and effort of commuting. What we need is some way of cutting this Gordian knot, so as to get the best of both models. Being in the office is a physical thing, so itโs not possible to eliminate the commute (for example) and still be in the office. Therefore, perhaps we should look at ways to enhance the remote model to achieve the advantages of the physical model.Itโs actually somewhat remarkable how little the technology in use for WFH today has changed in the last few years. There have detail improvements, but essentially itโs still exactly the same as it was 4-5 years ago. Meeting participants are represented by a (relatively) tiny picture on a computer screen. However good the video and audio, it cannot remotely compare to the full-spectrum experience of actually being with the other person(s).On the other hand, we already have tools like Microsoft Hololens, which together with Microsoft Mesh can create shared 3D workspaces. Hololens is a self-contained holographic device with enterprise-ready applications. Mesh has been integrated into Teams, so for those enterprises using Teams itโs just another application.Metaโs Quest allows remote collaboration in 3D simulated environments, VR meeting spaces with realistic human avatars, spatialized audio and gesture controls, all of which make interactions more natural. Appleโs new Vision Pro doesnโt seem to be primarily designed for enterprise collaboration, but the hardware it offers gives an idea of what is possible today, with precise eye/hand tracking, spatial mapping, voice control and mobile device synchronization.Perhaps it would be more productive for those executives mandating RTO to focus a similar amount of time and energy into upgrading the remote experience. The technology available today is still not where it needs to be to fully replicate the physical experience, but what is available is far better than what is typically being utilized.

I first starting working remotely over 10 years ago. Back then, we had video call technology, but it was clunky. We had team chat platforms, but they were often used in team pockets and not organization-wide (RIP HipChat). We could work collaboratively on files, but sharing those files was more challenging and less convenient. We made it work and still built strong team bonds across distance, even with less developed collaboration and communication tech.It is remarkable to see how far the remote work experience has evolved in such a short amount of time. Better remote technology enabled better remote work practices, making communication and collaboration more effortless, effective, flexible, and inclusive. We are still figuring out how to intentionally optimize distributed work. And, I know new tech like the innovation mentioned in the article will open up new possibilities that can expand access to flexible work and vastly improve the experience of working with others across distance. Super exciting to see. #FutureOfWork #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #EmergingTechnology #Collaboration #Communication #FlexibleWork #Innovation #VRhttps://lnkd.in/gVXJfsQY

๐งThey big question: is the Apple Vision Pro worth it for remote work? ๐กZoom launches new app for Apple Vision Pro to make hybrid collaboration more immersive. With people working in-person, remotely, or hybrid, Zoom is helping users facilitate connection, productivity, and collaboration with their colleagues and customers. Zoomโs app on Apple Vision Pro provides users with a native experience for meetings, giving them exceptional audio and video quality, as well as the ability to easily start, join, collaborate, and schedule meetings.Apple Vision Pro users can look forward to a number of new features with Zoom on visionOS:* Personas: Users are represented by an authentic spatial representation of themselves in Apple Vision Pro, allowing other meeting participants to see their facial and hand movements.* Spatial Zoom experience: Zoom on Apple Vision Pro creates an immersive experience that can be scaled to the perfect size, which is ideal for users wanting to feel like they are in the same room as their colleagues and customers, without the need for additional physical equipment or setup.Additional capabilities for Zoom on Apple Vision Pro, expected to be available later this spring, include:* 3D object sharing: For some industries, like media and design, sharing 3D files is an important part of the workflow. While itโs possible to share these files on traditional screens, the experience will come to life when seeing objects in the context of an environment. For instance, an animator or game designer could collaborate and share the latest character model via Zoomโs 3D object sharing capabilities.* Zoom Team Chat: Team Chat is tightly integrated with Zoom Meetings and makes it easy to share information and connect with teammates. Apple Vision Pro users will be able to collaborate with colleagues and streamline communications using Team Chat in the Zoom app.* Real-world pinning: Users will be able to pin up to five Zoom Meeting participants anywhere in their physical space, with the option to remove the background of pinned participants, helping Apple Vision Pro users feel more connected to the people in the meeting. The features offered by Zoom on Apple Vision Pro could indeed make remote work not just a viable alternative to in-person work but, in some respects, a superior one. The immersive and interactive nature of these tools addresses many of the challenges traditionally associated with remote work, such as communication barriers, collaboration difficulties, and the sense of isolation.#technology #innovation #future #futureofwork #remotework #digitaltransformation #linkedin #metaverse #spacialcomputing #mixedreality #linkedin

Apple Vision Pro: A Game-Changer in Remote Meeting DynamicsThe world of business communication is on the cusp of a transformative era, heralded by the advent of technologies like Apple's Vision Pro. This groundbreaking VR headset is redefining how remote meetings are conducted, offering an immersive experience that bridges the gap between virtual and physical interactions.Revolutionizing the Meeting SpaceAt the forefront of this change is Apple Vision Pro's innovative approach to virtual meetings. With life-size FaceTime video tiles and advanced collaborative tools, this technology is not just enhancing how we see and hear each other; it's reshaping our entire approach to collaboration. It allows participants to engage in a shared virtual space, creating a sense of presence and connection that traditional video conferencing tools have struggled to achieve. The Era of Enhanced ConnectivityThe power of these technologies lies in their ability to simulate a real-world environment. The immersive experience fosters a sense of togetherness and teamwork, crucial for effective collaboration. From brainstorming sessions to strategic planning meetings, the Apple Vision Pro and similar technologies are setting a new standard for how teams interact and work together, regardless of their physical locations.Beyond Apple: A Growing TrendWhile Apple's Vision Pro is a notable example, it's part of a larger trend. Other tech companies, like Meta with their Quest headset, are also exploring the realms of VR and AR. This competitive landscape signifies a broader shift towards virtual collaboration tools, each contributing unique features and experiences.Adapting to New Collaboration ToolsAs businesses adopt these new technologies, the focus isn't just on the hardware but also on adapting to new ways of working. This includes training teams to effectively utilize these tools and fostering a culture open to digital innovation. The transition to VR-based meetings requires not just technological adaptation but also a mindset shift in how we perceive and conduct remote work.Balancing Tech with Ethics and InclusivityAs we embrace these advancements, it's critical to consider their broader impact. Ensuring data privacy, addressing the digital divide, and fostering an inclusive virtual environment are key considerations. Technology should enhance, not hinder, our ability to conduct business ethically and inclusively.Looking AheadThe Apple Vision Pro and its contemporaries are just the beginning of a new era in business communication. These technologies are breaking down geographical barriers, enabling more effective and engaging collaborations, and paving the way for a future where remote meetings are as dynamic and productive as their in-person counterparts.#innovation #technology #digitaltransformation #futureofwork #remotework
